Having researched the history of premium brands over the past twenty years and having analysed the reasons why customers become loyal to a brand, we have come to believe that there are seven fundamental motivational needs that all human beings crave to have satisfied –
that is, motivational drivers (EmotiVators™), that determine whether or not you feel fulfilled as a person both in your private as well as professional life.
The research into motivational psychology was pioneered during the first half of the twentieth century by Abraham Malsow who developed his hierarchy of needs between 1939 and 1943. Maslow suggested that there are five human needs that range in order of importance, from the physiological needs to self-actualization.
Maslow maintained that these five needs are hierarchical – only once a preceding need has been satisfied, can the next need be realised. For the past eighty years, this model has informed the prevailing western thinking on the motivational drivers of human behaviour.
