Having spent most of my working career driving and sharpening the magic of brands and businesses across Africa and globally, I've learnt that we do our best when we're feeling our best and when we're learning something new. A day spent not learning is a day lost."
Bronwyn has worked in global, regional and local markets. She is an accomplished business executive with strong marketing, commercial acumen and an acutely defined strategic skillset.
She is currently the CMO for one of South Africa's most loved brands, Ackermans where she directs the Marketing strategy across the various brands, focusing mainly on apparel and fashion.
In her previous role as Group Head of Brand and Communications for South Africa's largest retail bank, Capitec, her responsibilities spanned across the Retail and Business Bank functions, including Brand strategy, positioning, digital communications, PR, production and Internal communications.
She has experience in the FinTech space as well, where she served as the Executive Head of Marketing for one of the largest African FinTech’s, Mukuru, across various African territories as well as the UK.
Prior to joining Mukuru, Bronwyn worked for Africa’s largest retailer, Shoprite Holdings for more than a decade as the National Marketing Manager across the Shoprite, Usave, Liquorshop, Financial services and MediRite brands. In her last position, she steered the Marketing, Media and white space initiatives across 5 brands across the continent and was the Marketing lead on the extremely successful loyalty programme Checkers Xtra Savings.
She thrives on turning around impossible briefs and challenging markets and segments that are volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous by drawing from her extensive experience across numerous heavyweight portfolios.
Another huge passion point has been to improve engagement and diversification of conversation among employees which is why she was pivotal in launching the Women in Leadership programme at Mukuru whereby previously taboo conversations about gender bias, has led to a sense of togetherness forming within her current organisation.

Dr Soon-Shiong is a much admired South African and a global scientific and business trailblazer. Maintaining utmost humility and as an energetic activist against South Africa’s apartheid government, he emerged as one of the major success stories of our country.
Patrick Soon-Shiong was born to Chinese immigrant parents in Gqeberha, South Africa, in 1952. He graduated top of his class from the University of the Witwatersrand, receiving a Bachelor's 2 degree in Medicine (MBBCh) at age 23. Despite racial prejudice, he completed his medical internship at the Johannesburg General Hospital. He then earned a master's degree at the University of British Columbia in 1979, with research awards from the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Association of Academic Surgery.
He moved to the United States and began surgical training at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and became a board-certified surgeon in 1984. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr Soon-Shiong has established himself as an internationally respected transplant surgeon, businessman, bioscientist, and media proprietor. He is the inventor of the revolutionary drug, Abraxane, renowned for its efficacy in the treatment of lung, breast, and pancreatic cancer.
As the youngest professor of surgery in UCLA’s history, he accomplished a milestone when performing the coastal region’s first successful pancreas transplant. He also performed the first islet cell transplant in the world at St Vincent’s Medical Center. By 1991, securing an investor, Dr Soon-Shiong launched a drug development company called VivoRx, and more companies – American Bioscience (to pursue cancer research), American 3 Pharmaceutical Partners, NantWorks (an assemblage of startups aimed at next-generation pharmaceutical development), and Fierce Biotech (to revolutionise digital healthcare).
Dr Soon-Shiong is also a dedicated philanthropist and chairs several non-profit organisations. A patriot, he committed $213 million to South Africa for COVID-19 vaccines and other therapies. Appointed as Old Mutual’s Group Chief Economist in 2023, he oversees all aspects of the company’s macroeconomic research, focusing on the impact of global economies on South Africa.
Apart from dissecting the moves of major economic players such as the USA, Europe and China, Johann is deeply involved in the study of South Africa’s economic indicators.
He provides strategic economic insights across the entire Old Mutual Group, influencing the investment decisions of a diverse range of investment entities within the group.
He is committed to ‘democratising’ economics by clarifying complex concepts and making them accessible and relevant to a wide audience, including clients, investors and the general public.
Approachable and upbeat by nature, Johann is a well-liked and respected figure in the field of economics, and his views are sought after by industry peers and the financial media.
Johann’s knowledge is built on a solid academic foundation and he holds a BCom (Hons) and an MCom from the University of Stellenbosch, where he was a recipient of a South African Reserve Bank (SARB) bursary.
After completing his studies, Johann joined the SARB’s Economics Department, immersing himself in the analysis and formulation of monetary policies.
Johann's passion for sharing knowledge, and cultivating future economists led him back to the University of Stellenbosch, where he took on the role of economics lecturer. He particularly valued the opportunity to bridge the gap between abstract theory and real-world application for his students.
Next stop for Johann was the banking sector. He joined Trust Bank, which would later integrate into Absa Bank. His role as an economist in a banking environment further broadened his experience and understanding of the financial sector.
Johann's long-standing association with Old Mutual began in 1991 when he joined the Old Mutual Investment Group as an economist. In 2017, he was appointed as the Head of Economic Research and Chief Economist, playing a pivotal role in shaping the group's economic strategy and investment decisions.
In 2023 Johann's career reached a new height with his appointment as Old Mutual Group Chief Economist.
As a prominent economist, Johann Els continues to be a guiding force in financial analysis and economic strategy, both within Old Mutual and in the broader economic community. His story is a testament to the power of dedication and a deep understanding of the economic landscape.

"Bruce Fordyce has done more for the promotion of running in South Africa than any other single individual in South African history. In addition to his iconic and unmatched athletic performances and experiences, he is an exceptional public speaker – one of the very best.
I have been listening to Bruce for more than 35 years. He is as fresh and even more enthusiastic than he was in 1981, when he won the Comrades Marathon for the first time. Meeting and hearing Bruce is always a life-enhancing experience. Become a fan. "
— Professor Tim Noakes, renowned author and sports scientist.
"You may know of Bruce as a result of his stellar Comrades career – 9 wins (still a Comrades record) , 30 runs, and current holder of the world record for 50 miles. He held the record for the down run for 21 years. He also broke the up run record three times.
"Eight of those wins were in consecutive years – unprecedented then, and now. The only reason why it wasn’t 9 in a row is because he chose to race the Standard Bank 100 km World Challenge in the 9th year, during which he set a world record. When he went back to the Comrades the following year, it was to win resoundingly once more.
"So, you may know of Bruce because he is still – perhaps always will be – the Comrades king. But what you may not know is how erudite he is. An outstanding storyteller, he has received more than one standing ovation. He’s also self-deprecating, humble and extremely funny."

As an international swimmer, Penny Heyns established herself as the world’s greatest female breaststroker of the 20th Century by becoming the only woman in Olympic history to win both the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke events in Atlanta 1996, bronze in Sydney 2000 and by breaking a total of 14 individual world records during her career.
Furthermore, she is still the only Breaststroke swimmer, male or female, in the history of swimming to break world records in all three possible distances, namely the 50m, 100m and 200m.
Her achievements brought her personal audiences with Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s beloved “Madiba”, and catapulted her into the world of sporting celebrity.
While she spent time in the US and Canada, her heart remained in South Africa, where she now lives. She has not, however, just excelled as a sports woman in the international arena, but has established herself, after her retirement in 2001, as a businesswoman, guest television presenter, and a sought after Inspirational speaker.
Her experiences, both while training internationally in the US and Canada with some of the most successful athletes in those respective countries, and while competing at the forefront of international competition, have given her unparalleled insights into what it takes to get to the top, and more importantly, how to stay there.
2006 saw Penny become an inaugural inductee into the South African Sport Hall of Fame and in May 2007 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida –USA. Most recently, in March 2012, she became the first non-track & field female athlete to be inducted into the Africa Sports Hall of Fame.
Penny served on FINA as Bureau member and Athlete's Commission Chair and was a member of WADA Compliance Review Committee.
Penny now embraces the platform and opportunity that sport has afforded her, to share her journey and experiences as a professional keynote speaker and through Swim Clinics/Camps and Mental Power Workshops.

My purpose is to use my creativity and unconditional love for life to guide people to pro-actively co-exist & appreciated the natural world around them.
My Principles
1) Creativity – seek new ways of seeing problems and creating solutions from them. The natural world has reservoir of knowledge and wisdom which if listen too can be hugely valuable.
2) Joy – being able to change the perspective of a problem, often reveals a brand-new solution. The natural work does this all the time creating opportunity of disaster/death.
3) Growth – what does this mean, what are we trying to grow into, the natural world teaches us that often less is more and all that we need is currently around us and it is just a choice we need to make.
4) Life not fair get over it – The natural world fundamentally knows this, and it is what enable it to thrive.
My vision is to link the way we live and do business with the principle of how the natural world works.
By studying and understanding the natural world we can find solutions to our everyday problems which have stood the test of time.
The natural world is founded on simple principles, but has managed to solve incredibly complex issues, as humanity grows, we are continually faced with new realities, mostly of our own creation and we need use the natural world wisdom and knowledge to unlock new thinking and solutions.

Born in Kempton Park, the 28 year old sprinter first showed his athletic potential as a teenager when he shattered the national junior record in Lusaka in 2012, and broke the sub-10 second barrier for the first time that following season.
He broke the SA 100m record in 2016, followed by a fifth place in the Olympic 100m final in Rio. The next year he continued to make history when he became the first South African to shatter the sub-10 and sub-20 barriers on the same day, clocking 9.93 over 100m and 19.95 in the 200m event.
2018 saw Simbine cementing his world-class sprinting pedigree when he won both the Commonwealth Games and African 100m titles.
After his 2020 season was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he remained laser focused on his 2021 campaign, and after leading the SA 4x100m team to victory at the World Relays in Chorzow, Simbine broke the long-standing African 100m record by clocking 9.84 in Szekesfehervar.
Simbine narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal in the men’s 100m final at the Tokyo Olympics in July when he fell short by 0.04 seconds. While reflecting on his disappointment after the race, Simbine also reiterated that this experience has given him the renewed motivation and drive to podium at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
But Simbine’s talents are not just limited to the sports field; the sprinter earned his Bachelor of Information Science degree in 2017 while making waves on the running track – a journey he admitted was challenging, but one he completed with determination and hard work.

Barry is a born and bred Durban North local. He moved to Johannesburg at the age of 24 where he joined the Jeppe Athletics Club. Although many know him as a Striders member, he actually ranwith Jeppe for most of his Comrades career. “My years at Jeppe were fantastic. I had a big hand in building the club. I love club life and the camaraderie of running with your mates,” he says.
Better schools and a wish to return to his roots led Barry and his family to the North Coast around 12 years ago. He found his new running home at Dolphin Coast Striders, which only had 80 members at the time (a far cry from the 500 today) and no firm ‘meeting’ spot.
Like Jeppe, he became Chairman of the club and created a strong bond between all the runners, a lot of whom have run alongside him during Comrades Marathons. Barry was also part of restarting the Indian Ocean Marathon, which galvanised the Striders and gave them a goal.
But let’s go back 50 years to Barry’s first Comrades. At 18-years-old, he took to the roads of Durban North early in the morning to start training. This lasted two weeks before he decided running was not for him. When the next year rolled around, Barry thought he’d try again – perhaps he was wrong the first time…
Unfortunately, this was not the case, and his ‘training’ only lasted three weeks!
“When I was 20, I told myself that this year I was going to train and I was going to run the Comrades – no excuses. After three weeks, I was close to giving up, but one morning I ran around a corner and saw a group of guys running together. They were theRegent Harriers. For the last three years, I just missed them during my runs. I started Comrades training with them, and the rest, as they say, is history.”
Running may seem like an individual sport – it’s just you, the road and your tekkies – but it can also be very social, and this is what kept Barry going. On the other hand, it is also an extremely ‘mental’ sport and takes commitment.
“You have to be very mentally strong. The Comrades is too long, too far, too hard – it’s easy to give up. Every day you have to make a choice – are you going to get up early every day to run or stay in your warm bed?”
Reflecting on 49 years of preparing for this world-famous marathon, Barry’s training has changed tremendously with age. “I divide my Comrades career into my racing years and surviving years,” he laughs. “I’ve gone from my best time of six and a half hours to finishing in 11 and a half hours. I used to train six days a week, about 140 kilometres, but can only do four days a week nowadays. It’s been difficult to accept that I can’t run like I used to. When you run this marathon, I believe you need to put everything out there and leave nothing on the road.”
Barry adds that the Comrades Marathon itself has also changed over the years in its enormity, from the number of runners, spectators and tables with water and refreshments to the grand setups at the registration and finishing line. However, what has always stayed the same is the camaraderie and spirit felt at every race, which is what he loves most.
As Barry gears up for his 50th (and last) Comrades Marathon, he recognises the incredible journey it has been. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have a family that has supported me along the way.” To say that the Comrades ‘runs’ through Barry’s family’s genes is an understatement.
Debbie, his wife, has run 20 Comrades Marathons and most of their seven children have run the marathon.
“The Comrades is a central theme in my life, but I have been blessed with so much more – successful businesses, lifelong friends, my kids and grandkids, and running in general. The journey of 50 Comrades has flowed like a river through my life,” Barry concludes.
