I had no idea that the insights generated from the more than 250 Leaders featured to date are holding the key to solving some of the world's biggest challenges - such as job creation, food security, nation-building and inclusive growth.

in terms of Education, Safety, Economic Prosperity, Healthcare, Social Capital and Environment
by calling on 14 Future-minded Leaders to each present their BIG Idea in a
TEDx Talk style presentation
on 24 October 2023

in the 2024 edition of the Future of Leadership Book - and all presenters will be invited to share their BIG Idea as part of the Future Leader Academy Curriculum
Yes We Can! Remember 2010?
Having co-designed the 2010 Brand Ambassador Program, I was privileged to witness first hand how South Africa motivated citizens to rally behind President Mbeki's Brand Promise of "Hosting the Most Successful World Cup Ever" and achieved the highest Visitor Advocacy Score of any FIFA World Cup (i.e. 92% vs Germany 88%)
and at the same time delivered a Visitor Experience that grew inbound tourism by 31% and business tourism up to 47% (and strengthened the exchange rate to a record high of R7/$ - whilst upgrading infrastructure such as major airports, new roads and even the Gautrain which drew gasps of surprise from many international visitors
What makes for a BIG Idea?
The Future Leader Summit is not just another talk shop but a design thinking platform that is geared to making a real difference in the lives of communities
To qualify for the next big idea competition, your idea needs to fit into the following criteria:
- B stands for Believable: For others to invest their time and money into taking your BIG Idea to the next level, you need to answer the question investors ask startups - in other words, does your idea have the ability to scale across communities in South Africa?
- I stands for Initiated: Your BIG Idea needs to be in working mode already, i.e. piloted in one place and show results.
- G stands for Generous: Your BIG Idea needs to appeal to the hearts and minds of corporate investors in such a way that they are willing to contribute funding.

South Africa's Ranking on the Legatum Prosperity Index
Pillar Rankings
In the 2023 Global Prosperity Index rankings, South Africa performs best on Personal Freedom and Social Capital and scores lowest on the National Environment pillar.
The biggest positive change over the past decade came in Health increasing by 13 places.

South Africa is 75th in the overall Prosperity Index rankings. Since the Prosperity Index began in 2007, South Africa has moved down the rankings table by 13 places.
